What is your current main version of Linux?

Edgy Eft

|

I have upgraded to Edgy from Dapper! Because of all the posts I read on the ubuntu forums about upgrade horror stories, I chose to just do a full reinstall. It wasn't so hard but I did run into a few problems that I will document in the next few posts.

One problem has yet to be solved, so if you know my solution, please let me know. My sound doesn't work when i first boot into Edgy, but after a restart it works fine. I will post all the specifics in another entry, but I must say there were a few more problems during the upgrade than I expected. Luckily, Ubuntu has the best support forum I've ever seen.

Oops!

Well, I installed compiz and I had problems with not unmounting the drive in windows before mounting it in linux and all kinds of other stuff, so now I don't even get a menu bar when I log on and Firefox won't save any settings. I think I'm going to have to reinstall Linux and all my goodies, and I think I'll leave off Compiz at least this time around. I'd like to use this laptop for more general purposes and I think I'd like to keep it a little more on the safe side.

I'll post my findings when I learn of the new things I have to do. Until then, if anyone has any ideas on what I can customize, add a comment on here. I am fully open to suggestions.

Dual Booting Dilemmas

|

This isn’t exactly in order for being a blog, but I have found one thing that could be concerning for other dual-booters out there. If you have a program that mounts your ext3 drive (or probably any Linux format) in windows, if you hibernate windows and then boot into Linux, it can cause some real problems. You need to go into windows and shut down properly first, this will unmount the volume in question. It actually took me a little while to figure out what was going on, but then it dawned on me. If you try to mount a drive that was never unmounted by your other OS, things that you need were never closed properly.
